Holmes Scholarship. A $250 scholarship, supported by Harry and Davin<br />
Holmes <strong>of</strong> Medford, is awarded annually to a graduate <strong>of</strong> a Jackson County,<br />
<strong>Oregon</strong> high school who is in financial need and shows high scholastic promise.<br />
Herbert Crombie Howe Scholarship. This scholarship is endowed through<br />
a gift from Mrs. Herbert Crombie Howe in memory <strong>of</strong> her husband, a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the faculty <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> English from 1901 until his death in 1940, and<br />
for many years faculty representative to the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Athletic<br />
Conference. It is awarded to students injured in athletic competition, to help them<br />
continue their education.<br />
Maurice Harold Hunter Scholarship. The Maurice Harold Hunter Leadership<br />
Scholarship, covering full tuition ($300), is awarded annually to the junior<br />
man in the <strong>University</strong>, a resident <strong>of</strong> the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>, who is judged to have<br />
made the most notable contribution, through his own achievements and good<br />
example, toward the development <strong>of</strong> qualities <strong>of</strong> leadership among his fellow<br />
students. The names <strong>of</strong> the recipients are engraved on a permanent plaque, which<br />
is displayed in the Browsing Room in the Student Union. The scholarship is<br />
supported through gifts to the <strong>University</strong> by Honorary Chancellor and Mrs.<br />
Frederick Maurice Hunter and Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Francis Hunter, in honor <strong>of</strong><br />
their son and brother, Captain Maurice Harold Hunter, Class <strong>of</strong> '41. Captain<br />
Hunter was killed in action in Burma on January 31, 1945.<br />
Lowe Scholarships. Two $150 scholarships, supported by Mr. and Mrs.<br />
George K. Lowe <strong>of</strong> Eugene, <strong>Oregon</strong>, are awarded annually to <strong>University</strong> men students<br />
on the basis <strong>of</strong> scholastic ability and performance, character, citizenship,<br />
interest and pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in sports, and need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance.<br />
Karl W. Onthank Scholarships. Three $500 scholarships are awarded annually<br />
to out-<strong>of</strong>-state students and five $300 scholarships to in-state students, in<br />
honor <strong>of</strong> Karl W. Onthank, Class <strong>of</strong> '16 and member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> faculty<br />
since 1916.<br />
Order <strong>of</strong> the 0 Scholarship. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to<br />
the outstanding high-school athlete from the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> who enters the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>. The award is supported through work projects undertaken<br />
by the Order <strong>of</strong> the 0, a campu,s varsity lettermen's organization.<br />
<strong>Oregon</strong> Dads Scholarships. The <strong>Oregon</strong> Dads organization awards annually<br />
the $500 Donald M. Erb Memorial Scholarship and twenty-five or more scholarships<br />
ranging in value from $100 to $300 to freshman students graduating from<br />
<strong>Oregon</strong> high schools. Recipients <strong>of</strong> the scholarships are chosen on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />
academic record, financial need, and promise <strong>of</strong> successful <strong>University</strong> work. Highschool<br />
students may apply for <strong>Oregon</strong> Dads scholarships during their senior year<br />
or during the two years following their graduation.<br />
<strong>Oregon</strong> Mothers Scholarships. The <strong>Oregon</strong> Mothers organization awards<br />
annually five $500 scholarships and twenty or more fee scholarships to freshman<br />
students graduating from <strong>Oregon</strong> high schools. Recipients <strong>of</strong> the scholarships are<br />
chosen on the basis <strong>of</strong> academic record, financial need, and promise <strong>of</strong> successful<br />
<strong>University</strong> work. High-school students may apply for <strong>Oregon</strong> Mothers scholarships<br />
during their senior year or during the two years following their graduation.<br />
Orides Mothers-Janet Smith Scholarships. Two fee scholarships are<br />
awarded each year to senior Orides girls. Funds for the scholarships are given by<br />
the Orides Mothers Club and friends <strong>of</strong> the late Miss Janet Smith.<br />
Phi Gamma Delta Scholarship. The Phi Gamma Delta Scholarship, a memorial<br />
to Robert C. Jones, is a $135 award given annually to a junior student who<br />
is outstanding in scholarship, leadership, and prospects for future service. Mr.
