1.31.6 Utilities<br />

A. Pursuant to Section 4216 of the Government Code, at least 2 working days prior<br />

to commencing any excavation, the Contractor will be required to contact the<br />

regional notification center (Underground Service Alert of Southern California)<br />

<strong>and</strong> obtain an inquiry identification number.<br />

B. The following includes a list, but is not limited to, of utility companies <strong>and</strong><br />

representatives whose facilities may be impacted by this Project:<br />

Utility Protection:<br />

A. All utilities encountered during the execution of the Work shall be maintained<br />

continuously in service, unless other arrangements satisfactory to the utility<br />

LAWA <strong>and</strong> the Engineer are made. Utilities shall include, but not be limited to, all<br />

above or below ground conduit, pipes, wet wells, ducts, cables, <strong>and</strong><br />

appurtenances associated with oil, gas, water, steam, irrigation, sewer, storm<br />

drain, wastewater, air, electrical, power, instrumentation, communication,<br />

telephone, TV, <strong>and</strong> lighting systems, whether or not owned by the City. All<br />

valves, switches, vaults, <strong>and</strong> meters shall be maintained readily accessible for<br />

emergency shutoff.<br />

B. Fire <strong>and</strong> police call boxes <strong>and</strong> conduits shall be protected by the Contractor.<br />

Should said facilities be damaged by the Contractor's operations, immediate<br />

notification shall be given to LAWA.<br />

C. When placing concrete around or contiguous to any non-metallic utility<br />

installation, the Contractor will be required to :<br />

1) Furnish <strong>and</strong> install a 50mm (2 inch) cushion of expansion joint material or<br />

other similar resilient material; or<br />

2) Provide a sleeve or other opening which will result in a 50mm (2 inch)<br />

minimum-clear annular space between the concrete <strong>and</strong> the utility; or<br />

3) Provide other acceptable means to prevent embedment in or bonding to the<br />

concrete.<br />

D. Where concrete is used for backfill or for structures which would result in<br />

embedment, or partial embedment, of a metallic utility installation; or where the<br />

coating, bedding or other cathodic protection system is exposed or damaged by<br />

the Contractor's operations, the Contractor shall notify the Airport Contact <strong>and</strong><br />

arrange to secure the advice of the affected utility LAWA regarding the<br />

procedures required to maintain or restore the integrity of the system.<br />
