sufficient calories, but they originate rather too much from carbo-hydrates, and
too little from fats and proteins.
The future development of native agriculture will be a laborious and slow process.
In fact, any perceptible increase in the agricultural activity will be out of the
question, before the usually closed communities will be further opened up and
money will be introduced as a medium of exchange. Agricultural development is
sought, amongst other things, in the rationalization of the present extensive
forms of agriculture, the extension of the food assortment, the inclusion of cash
crops in the present cropping plan, better treatment of commercial crops, improvement
of the marketing of products, encouraging cooperation, agricultural
education, etc.
In 1952 the staff of the agricultural service comprised: 5 university-trained agricultural
advisers, 12 agricultural officers, 2 horticultural officers, 1 inland fishery
official, 1 inspection official, 5 agricultural supervisors, 3 agricultural teachers,
37 agricultural mantries (native assistants), and some administrative personnel.
On the 1952 balance sheet figure Dfl. 893 461,- for liabilities and Dfl. 315 000,for
assets.
