Monastic Island of Reicheneau - UNESCO: World Heritage

The church of St. Georg in Oberzell, restored in 1990,
has been inspected in 1992, 1994 and 1998. Inspection is
due again in 2001.
The most recent inspection of the Marienmünster (St.
Mary’s Minster) at Mittelzell took place in 1994. The church
is inspected on a regular basis.
In the case of the church of St. Peter und Paul in Mittelzell,
preparations for conservation work to the interior are
under way. The work will be carried out in 1999/2000. The
buildings owned by the municipality as well as those in
private hands are maintained according to standard maintenance
policies; it may be assumed that their state of conservation
is good.

the property
Expert publications on the history, cultural history and art
history of the island of Reichenau appear on a regular basis
in international specialist literature.
The island of Reichenau is the main focus of the research
programme “Freiburger Forschungen zum ersten Jahrtausend
in Südwestdeutschland” conducted by Freiburg University.
Publication of the results of the research into building
history and building techniques conducted at St. Georg at
Oberzell by the Landesdenkmalamt Freiburg is under way.
The available material on the Marienmünster (St. Mary’s
Minster) at Mittelzell and the church of St. Peter und Paul
(Niederzell) is scheduled for publication. The geo-historical
report (enclosure A10) provides a basis for further measures
related to the protection, presentation and promotion of
the property. The inventory of immovable cultural monuments
on the island of Reichenau compiled by the Landesdenkmalamt
Baden-Württemberg has been completed in
1999 (enclosure A5). It lists over 70 cultural monuments, and
13 cultural monuments of outstanding value, currently enjoying
the protection of the law on the protection of cultural
monuments of Baden-Württemberg. Policies and programmes
related to the presentation and promotion of the
property by the municipality of Reichenau are listed in enclosure
A20.
