Report on the Conditions <strong>of</strong> the Buildings on the Site<br />

About 95% <strong>of</strong> the Reichenau houses have been<br />

renovated in the past 50 years, i.e. technical<br />

installations (electricity, heating and sanitary<br />

installations) were added or modernised.<br />

Ro<strong>of</strong>tops, plasters and windows were repaired<br />

or renewed.<br />

Historical buildings vastly unchanged in their<br />

original substance are enrolled in the ”List <strong>of</strong><br />

architectural and artistic cultural monuments”<br />

and as such under care <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Landesdenkmalamt (State Office for the<br />

Protection <strong>of</strong> Cultural Monuments).<br />

Buildings renewed in significant parts <strong>of</strong> their<br />

historical substance (e. g. with a new-built ro<strong>of</strong>truss)<br />

may not be protected by the<br />

Denkmalschutzgesetz (Law on the Protection <strong>of</strong><br />

Cultural Monuments), but are considered to be<br />

worthy <strong>of</strong> conservation; see ”Historische<br />

Bebauung der Insel Reichenau” (Enclosure A6<br />

– Historical Buildings on the <strong>Island</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Reichenau).<br />

The following statements apply to cultural<br />

monuments protected by the law only.<br />

The cultural monuments are categorised as<br />

follows: 1. ”restored”, 2. ”rehabilitated and<br />

modernised”, 3. ”in need <strong>of</strong> renovation”.<br />

1 Buildings restored very well, i. e. buildings<br />

rehabilitated in close co-operation with the<br />

Landesdenkmalamt (State Office for the<br />

Protection <strong>of</strong> Cultural Monuments) and in<br />

consideration <strong>of</strong> their historical substance<br />

and historical details <strong>of</strong> construction.<br />

In the 19 th century some <strong>of</strong> the buildings,<br />

formerly owned by the Church, where divided<br />

and given to different families. Thus the need for<br />

constructional changes (like new entries or<br />

flights <strong>of</strong> stairs) arose. Later renovations <strong>of</strong><br />

these houses were implemented independently<br />

and without regard to unity in manner or style<br />

(e. g. a half-timbered construction uncovered<br />

on one half <strong>of</strong> the house and plastered over on<br />

the other).<br />

The state <strong>of</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> these buildings is<br />

described in category 2.
