Report on the Conditions of the Buildings on the Site
About 95% of the Reichenau houses have been
renovated in the past 50 years, i.e. technical
installations (electricity, heating and sanitary
installations) were added or modernised.
Rooftops, plasters and windows were repaired
or renewed.
Historical buildings vastly unchanged in their
original substance are enrolled in the ”List of
architectural and artistic cultural monuments”
and as such under care of the
Landesdenkmalamt (State Office for the
Protection of Cultural Monuments).
Buildings renewed in significant parts of their
historical substance (e. g. with a new-built rooftruss)
may not be protected by the
Denkmalschutzgesetz (Law on the Protection of
Cultural Monuments), but are considered to be
worthy of conservation; see ”Historische
Bebauung der Insel Reichenau” (Enclosure A6
– Historical Buildings on the Island of
Reichenau).
The following statements apply to cultural
monuments protected by the law only.
The cultural monuments are categorised as
follows: 1. ”restored”, 2. ”rehabilitated and
modernised”, 3. ”in need of renovation”.
1 Buildings restored very well, i. e. buildings
rehabilitated in close co-operation with the
Landesdenkmalamt (State Office for the
Protection of Cultural Monuments) and in
consideration of their historical substance
and historical details of construction.

In the 19 th century some of the buildings,
formerly owned by the Church, where divided
and given to different families. Thus the need for
constructional changes (like new entries or
flights of stairs) arose. Later renovations of
these houses were implemented independently
and without regard to unity in manner or style
(e. g. a half-timbered construction uncovered
on one half of the house and plastered over on
the other).
