4. Management<br />
The major buildings on the monastic island <strong>of</strong> Reichenau meet the<br />
test <strong>of</strong> authenticity in design, material, workmanship and setting as<br />
they are original structures conserved in their historically evolved<br />
form. Repairs have been carried out in keeping with the most modern<br />
principles; elements from all architectural stages have been retained<br />
as far as possible. There has been no reconstruction on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />
conjecture.<br />
The monastic island <strong>of</strong> Reichenau is protected by legislation, plans<br />
and projects at the municipal, regional, national and international<br />
levels and by expert administrative institutions ensuring its<br />
conservation. (See paragraphs 4-6)<br />
f Agreed Plans Related to Property<br />
On the monastic island <strong>of</strong> Reichenau and in the established buffer<br />
zone <strong>of</strong> Wollmatinger Ried the protection <strong>of</strong> monuments and<br />
historical structures is closely related to the protection and<br />
preservation <strong>of</strong> the conservation areas and nature reserves. Protection<br />
and preservation <strong>of</strong> the conservation areas and nature reserve at the<br />
same time protect the environment <strong>of</strong> the monuments against<br />
inappropriate building activities and a diminution <strong>of</strong> the overall<br />
appearance and serve to maintain the characteristic features <strong>of</strong> the<br />
monastic island, in particular the vast areas used for agricultural<br />
purposes around the monuments. The following plans (i. e.<br />
regulations) <strong>of</strong> the municipality serve this goal:<br />
Landscape Plan<br />
This extensive work was established as an appendix to and in the<br />
course <strong>of</strong> the establishment <strong>of</strong> the land development plan. It applies<br />
to the complete legal area <strong>of</strong> the municipality <strong>of</strong> Reichenau. From<br />
this plan it is clear that 72% <strong>of</strong> the legal area <strong>of</strong> the municipality <strong>of</strong><br />
Reichenau are nature reserves and conservation areas respectively.<br />
Habitat Mapping<br />
All <strong>of</strong> the legal area <strong>of</strong> Reichenau is mapped, the biotopes according<br />
to § 24 a Bundesnaturschutzgesetzt (Federal Law on Nature<br />
Preserves) are marked and named. In collaboration with a firm for<br />
open space planning and land development the municipality is<br />
establishing a habitat network.
