MEDIA PLUS AND THE EUROPEAN UNION’S SUPPORT FOR
PROMOTION OF FEATURE FILMS AND AUDIOVISUAL WORKS
With the introduction of MEDIA Plus at the beginning of 2001 for the coming five years, the MEDIA Programme
has enhanced its efforts to improve the circulation and promotion of feature films and audiovisual works through
its support for festivals and by increasing the presence of European and international markets.
While an integral part of the economics of cinema, festivals also play a unique cultural, social and educational
role for audiences. Conscious of the fact that the links between the European audience and its cinema must be
strengthened, the MEDIA Programme annually supports some fifty festivals within the member states and participating
countries. Some 10,000 films and programmes, representing the richness and diversity of the European
film, are presented to a public audience of 2,000,000 people.
Furthermore, the European Commission has for some time been associated with the networking of film festivals
at the European level. In this area, the activities of the European Coordination of Film Festivals encourages
cooperation between festivals leading to the development of common actions with a positive impact on
European cinema.
