Narrow is the Gate
Gracanica ist ein serbisches Kloster im Kosovo.
Schwedische KFOR-Soldaten schützen rund um die
Uhr die wenigen gebliebenen Mönche und Nonnen
vor Übergriffen. Die 86-jährige Schwester Teodora hütet
die Klosterpforte. Mit anderen Serben teilt sie ihre
Hassgefühle. Doch sie kennt die Ordensregeln und die
zehn Gebote, die ihr Nächstenliebe gebieten.
Gracanica convent is a strangely peaceful sanctuary
that holds together an isolated and demoralized Serbian
enclave in post-war Kosovo. This fragile sanctuary
is secured, on the one hand by the prayers of the
monks and nuns, and on the other by the constant
presence of NATO soldiers.
Sister Teodora, gatekeeper to the convent, is herself a
kind of gateway. In her we see the narrow meetingplace
of both the lingering hostility that she shares
with her fellow Serbs, and also the divine call to love
the enemy which the life of the convent never allows
her to forget.
