»Berlin ist ein großes, großartiges und sehr
anspruchsvolles Motiv. Während der Dreharbeiten
hatte ich sehr oft das Gefühl, ich
müsste 500 Kamera gleichzeitig einschalten
können, um ihm gerecht zu werden. Ich war
an einem Ort und dachte ständig daran, was
es an all den anderen Orten der Stadt im selben
Moment zu filmen gäbe. Nur wenn ich es
schaffte, mich von dieser Ohnmacht zu lösen,
mich wirklich ohne innere Ablenkung auf eine
Situation oder einen Ort einzulassen, war
mein Blick frei für eine genaue Beobachtung.«

In 1927, Walther Ruttmann shot his symphonic
documentary: Berlin – Symphony of a City. In
September the same year, the silent film, accompanied
by specially composed music, had
its première at Tauentzien-Palast. A seventyman
symphony orchestra, directed by composer
Edmund Meisel himself, played during
the screening of the film. Ruttmann’s film is
nowadays considered as one of the great film
classics and as the film about Berlin.
75 years later, Berlin is going through a uniquely
vital and exciting period of awakening
and radical change. Ten years after the fall of
the Berlin Wall, traces of history meet energetically
a city re-created. Faces of utmost difference
start to form a metropolis, occasionally
reminiscent of Berlin in the Twenties.
Berlin is really vibrating, and with its various
rhythms of re-creation it transmits the spirit of
a city more than in any place on this planet. It
is now time to review Walther Ruttmann’s
wonderful film anew.
Keeping the basic dramaturgical principles of
the original, e. g. by subordinating every
scene of the film to an overall symphonic
structure, presenting the motive »city« in
35 mm and black and white in various topics,
the re-make, based on these principles, is
searching for its own pictorial and narrative,
dramaturgical structure. The music, exclusively
composed for this film, will present an
entirely new level of sound.
