Drei Kinder sind verstümmelt in einem Bach gefunden
worden. Eine Kleinstadt will Gerechtigkeit oder auch
einfach nur Rache. Die Regisseure sprechen mit den
Angehörigen der Opfer, den Familien der (angeblichen)
Täter und den drei inhaftieren Jugendlichen, die
die Kinder in einem satanistischen Ritual ermordet
haben sollen. Sind diese drei Teenager, denen die Kamera
so oft so unangenehm nahe kommt, tatsächlich
This non-narrated »cinema-vérité«-feature film captures
a year in the life of a small southern town as it
comes to grips with one of the most horrifying crimes
in the region´s history. This dark odyssey begins with
the tragic murders of three 8-year old boys whose
mutilated bodies were discovered in a shallow creek
along Interstate 55 in West Memphis, Arkansas. The
community demanded justice and one month later
the police delivered: three local tennagers who were
accused of sacrificing little boys as part of a Satanic
ritual.
»Focusing on the individuals involved, their families,
and the trial itself, filmmakers Joe Berlinger and
Bruce Sinofsky document this community in the year
following the murders. Through subtly nuanced
depictions of the court proceedings and the ever-present
news reporters, the film questions the power of
the media. The character study of Echols, the alleged
Satanic ring leader, is a deeply disturbing look at the
way our society treats difference and how it attempts
to articulate the elusive nature of good and evil. Pursuing
issues left out of the courtroom and emotions
too powerful for the sound-bite-driven news media,
the film intimately examines the families
of both victims and suspects as
they try to come to terms with their
pain and frustration. But the filmmakers
never editorialize. Instead, the
film creates a deeply resonant drama
about American justice.«
