QUAESTIONES CYRENAICAE. 91<br />

No. 37 belongs to ano<strong>the</strong>r anonymous group, examples<br />

<strong>of</strong> which are probably <strong>the</strong> commonest coins <strong>of</strong> Barce.<br />

<strong>The</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> Ammon is coarse, <strong>the</strong> hair<br />

<strong>and</strong> beard freely treated in luxuriant curls, <strong>the</strong> eye<br />

heavy, with <strong>the</strong> pupil strongly<br />

marked. <strong>The</strong> head is<br />

still on <strong>the</strong> reverse. <strong>The</strong> whorls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> silphium are<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kind already noted under Nos. 29 <strong>and</strong> 30. <strong>The</strong><br />

style is freer than on No. 32, though not so good ; <strong>the</strong><br />

inscription has followed <strong>the</strong> silphium plant on to <strong>the</strong><br />

obverse. Coins <strong>of</strong> this class lead into <strong>and</strong> doubtless<br />

overlap <strong>the</strong> series bearing magistrates' names, which<br />

we may now discuss.<br />

<strong>The</strong> magistrates already recognized at Barce are<br />

4>AIN- -, KAINin, KYYEAH Til OlAnN(O^),<br />

<strong>and</strong> AKEIO, to <strong>the</strong>se I would add <strong>the</strong> uncertain<br />

name flfl ? on No. 36 above, <strong>and</strong> AAAI .<br />

<strong>The</strong> earliest magistrate seems to be AIN . With<br />

this name we have one tetradrachm at Paris (Muller,<br />

i. 317), <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> following drachm.<br />

88. Obv. Silphium with two whorls (<strong>of</strong> three leaves),<br />

seven umbels, <strong>and</strong> root ; V\ <br />

I A<br />

Eev.~ Head <strong>of</strong> bearded Ammon r., transitional style,<br />

hair loose ; in front SAB } dotted circle ;<br />

circular incuse.<br />

B. M. M. -75. Wt. 50-2 grs. Samian drachm<br />

(misnumbered 36 on Plate IV).<br />

<strong>The</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> Ammon recalls No. 30 <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> last period, though it has not <strong>the</strong> same peculiar<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horn. To <strong>the</strong>se two coins I would<br />

add <strong>the</strong> following tetradrachm from Parma.<br />

39. Obv. Silphium plant with two whorls <strong>and</strong> seven<br />

umbels, at <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> which a recumbent<br />

gazelle: in field 1. upwards. MIO.
