to determine <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> its introduction if we can.<br />

<strong>The</strong> same st<strong>and</strong>ard appears at two o<strong>the</strong>r places,<br />

Samos u <strong>and</strong> Ephesus. At Samos it is an innovation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

accompanied by a fur<strong>the</strong>r innovation in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong><br />

a reverse type. 25 <strong>The</strong> earliest coins which can with<br />

certainty be assigned to this isl<strong>and</strong> have no reverse type<br />

<strong>and</strong> are <strong>of</strong> a different st<strong>and</strong>ard. 2 '3 At Ephesus, if we<br />

accept <strong>the</strong> attribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pieces with a crawling<br />

bee seen in pr<strong>of</strong>ile, 27 <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard appears towards <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixth century, under<br />

Persian rule ; if we reject it, <strong>the</strong> first coins <strong>of</strong> such<br />

a weight are those with <strong>the</strong> usual Ephesian types<br />

given to <strong>the</strong> opening years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century. 28 "We<br />

shall not be far wrong, <strong>the</strong>n, if we place <strong>the</strong> first appear-<br />

ance in S.W. Asia Minor <strong>of</strong> this st<strong>and</strong>ard (whatever<br />

its origin) in <strong>the</strong> last years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixth century, <strong>and</strong><br />

in view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> close connexion <strong>of</strong> this district (<strong>and</strong><br />

especially Samos) with Gyrene we may infer that <strong>the</strong><br />

same years saw its first appearance in Africa as well.<br />

This brings us to ano<strong>the</strong>r question, <strong>the</strong> approximate<br />

date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> introduction <strong>of</strong> a reverse type into <strong>the</strong><br />

incuse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest coins. Of <strong>the</strong> districts connected<br />

24 Where in later times its tetradrachms were so thoroughly<br />

established as to have acquired <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> oran/p Trar/no? (Hist.<br />

preclude Babelon's attribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to Polycrates.<br />
