at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> seventy-four years. He was born in London in<br />

1840, <strong>and</strong> was educated at Aldenham School, Hertfordshire.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> first his energies were devoted to our Eastern<br />

Empire. He served in <strong>the</strong> India Office in 1859, joined <strong>the</strong><br />

Bombay Infantry as an ensign <strong>the</strong> following year, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

promoted in 1862. He was assistant Political Kesident at<br />

Aden in 1864, <strong>and</strong> was attached to <strong>the</strong> Bombay Staff Corps<br />

<strong>the</strong> following year. He took part in Mr. Eassam's Mission to<br />

King <strong>The</strong>odore <strong>of</strong> Abyssinia in 1864, <strong>and</strong> from some time<br />

in 1866 till April, 1868, was kept in captivity at Magdala<br />

by order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King.<br />

Lieutenant Prideaux received <strong>the</strong> medal for <strong>the</strong> Abyssinian<br />

campaign <strong>and</strong> was made Political Agent at Zanzibar 1873.<br />

He was appointed Assistant Secretary to <strong>the</strong> Government<br />

<strong>of</strong> India in <strong>the</strong> Foreign Department in 1875, <strong>and</strong> filled <strong>the</strong><br />

position till 1879. He was Political Agent at Bhopal in<br />

1879-80. Subsequently he was Agent<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Governor-<br />

General with <strong>the</strong> ex-King <strong>of</strong> Oudh, <strong>and</strong> Superintendent <strong>of</strong><br />

Political Pensions at Calcutta, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficiating Kesident in<br />

<strong>the</strong> East Kajputana States in 1882-83. He was afterwards<br />

Resident at Jaipur, acting Resident in Kashmir, <strong>and</strong> Resident<br />

in Mewar, reaching <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong> Colonel in 1890. In 1893-94<br />

Colonel Prideaux was acting Agent to <strong>the</strong> Governor- General<br />

in Rajputana, <strong>and</strong> in 1894-95 again Resident in Jaipur.<br />

He was nominated a Companion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Star <strong>of</strong> India in<br />

January, 1895, reverted to <strong>the</strong> military department in April,<br />

1895, <strong>and</strong> was placed on <strong>the</strong> unemployed supernumerary list<br />

in 1898. He was <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> Tlie Lay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Himyarites,<br />

an edition <strong>of</strong> ihe Letters <strong>of</strong> S. T. Coleridge <strong>and</strong> Bibliographies<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> Robert Louis Stevenson, <strong>of</strong> Coleridge <strong>and</strong><br />

E. Fitzgerald, <strong>and</strong> was a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> Geographical<br />

<strong>Society</strong>. He had been a member <strong>of</strong> our <strong>Society</strong> since 1878.<br />

To <strong>the</strong> <strong>Numismatic</strong> Chronicle for 1884 he contributed an<br />

important article on <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> Axum, previously quite<br />

he also contributed a number <strong>of</strong> articles on <strong>the</strong><br />

unstudied ;
