144 E. S. G. KOBINSON.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> obverse in each case, above <strong>the</strong> chariot, which<br />

is proceeding at a walk, is a solar disk, a feature<br />

unknown on any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r obverse dies ;<br />

in fact <strong>the</strong><br />

KYXAIPIO^ die gives <strong>the</strong> impression <strong>of</strong> being directly<br />

suggested by <strong>the</strong> KYAIO30 die. Again, under<br />

every magistrate in <strong>the</strong> first group, <strong>and</strong> under <strong>the</strong><br />

first two in <strong>the</strong> second group (save possibly in one<br />

instance, where it may be a seated Ammon; see M.<br />

i. 189, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong> this coin below), <strong>the</strong> reverse<br />

is occupied by <strong>the</strong> seated Zeus Lycaeus. Under <strong>the</strong> last<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second group, PIOAI AN0EY3, we find throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ing Zeus Ammon. Style <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> types thus point irresistibly to a direct succession<br />

to <strong>the</strong> KYXAIPIO5<br />

from <strong>the</strong> KYAIOS0 - - group<br />

group. As has been hinted above, <strong>and</strong> as will be demonstrated<br />

later, CIOAIAN0EYS, <strong>the</strong> last <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter<br />

group, must come down to <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ptolemaic era. <strong>The</strong> APlSTArOPA XAlPEniSI-<br />

AAMHNAKTO3 group will <strong>the</strong>refore come at <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> series.<br />

This conclusion is confirmed by two o<strong>the</strong>r con-<br />

siderations. <strong>The</strong> first, though it <strong>of</strong>fers only negative<br />

evidence, is worth taking into account. Under<br />

APISTArOPA, XAlPEniM, <strong>and</strong> AAMHNAKTO*<br />

<strong>the</strong> only known subdivision is <strong>the</strong> tenth. Under<br />

KYAIOS0 - - <strong>and</strong> 0EYEIAEY5 we find <strong>the</strong> drachm<br />

as well; IA3HN adds <strong>the</strong> triobol; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

set is maintained under XAlPlO^ 92<br />

(except <strong>the</strong><br />

tenths), <strong>and</strong> under nOAIAN0EYS. Thus if <strong>the</strong><br />

order suggested for <strong>the</strong>se magistrates be correct<br />
