QUAESTIONES CYKENAICAE. 103<br />

<strong>the</strong> two shoots which occur on<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> silphium plant, remarking that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no coin at Gyrene which <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong>se criteria.<br />

But (1) <strong>the</strong> uraeus occurs as <strong>of</strong>ten at Cyrene as at Barce<br />

(e.g. under Nikis <strong>and</strong> Aristomedes) ; (2) though <strong>the</strong><br />

symbol on <strong>the</strong> obverse is a Barcaean touch, <strong>the</strong><br />

Aristomedes at Cyrene (on No. 46) ; (3)<br />

This form <strong>of</strong><br />

silphium is really commoner at Cyrene than at Barce.<br />

<strong>The</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> silphium<br />

suggest <strong>the</strong> finer issues <strong>of</strong> API3TOMHAEO& On <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> symbol (spray <strong>of</strong> laurel) on <strong>the</strong> obverse<br />

is ra<strong>the</strong>r a Barcaean feature, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> name itself would<br />

perhaps suggest Barce, where <strong>the</strong> population was to<br />

a much greater degree mixed with <strong>the</strong> indigenous<br />

stock. <strong>The</strong> uraeus which is worn has a curious peculiarity;<br />

it seemingly does not rise from a diadem, but<br />

appears to be fixed in <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> something more<br />

rigid (ra<strong>the</strong>r like a stephane), which encircles <strong>the</strong> brow<br />

but not <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head. <strong>The</strong> following coin may<br />

also possibly belong to AIBYSTPATOS.<br />

53. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> bearded Ammon 1., <strong>of</strong> ra<strong>the</strong>r similar<br />

style, without diadem or uraeus : symbol<br />

Rev. Silphium with two whorls <strong>and</strong> five umbels ; in<br />

front r., upwards, SAT .<br />

Samian tetradrachm.<br />

Unfortunately, <strong>the</strong> necessary cleaning <strong>of</strong> this coin<br />

has reduced it considerably in weight; at <strong>the</strong> same<br />

time most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> surface is gone, so that it is impossible<br />

to make out what <strong>the</strong> reverse inscription was, or<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> remains behind <strong>the</strong> neck on <strong>the</strong> obverse
