KOINON coins <strong>of</strong>ten struck over <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>y<br />

must have first appeared before 250. <strong>The</strong> series is<br />

only interrupted by <strong>the</strong> coins with <strong>the</strong> monogram K<br />

<strong>and</strong> by a piece with <strong>the</strong> types Obv. Ram r., Rev. Eagle<br />

L, BASIAEHS HTOAEMAIOY in field 1. star (M.i. 377<br />

= Svor. 1243), or thunderbolt (Svor. 1244). For <strong>the</strong><br />

latter, Svoroiios, who gives <strong>the</strong>m to Ptolemy V, will<br />

not allow <strong>the</strong> Cyrenaic origin which is generally<br />

recognized. But, though fabric <strong>and</strong> style do not help<br />

us here, surely <strong>the</strong> type implies a Cyrenaic origin.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ram meets us on <strong>the</strong> copper coins <strong>of</strong> Barce (Nos. 80,<br />

(M. i. 423 <strong>and</strong> 430).<br />

younger Magas<br />

? Mtiller has with some reason main-<br />

to be assigned definitely to Berenice-Euesperides on<br />

<strong>the</strong> strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wreath <strong>of</strong> apple-branch, <strong>the</strong> club<br />

type with its reference to Heracles, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> particular<br />

connexion between <strong>the</strong> princess <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, to which<br />

she may have stood in <strong>the</strong> same relation as Arsinoe,<br />

wife <strong>of</strong> Lysimachus, did to Cass<strong>and</strong>rea, Tium <strong>and</strong><br />

Amastris; 222 <strong>and</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r, that her son Magas was<br />

governor for her until his death, <strong>the</strong> result perhaps,<br />

as Six suggests, <strong>of</strong> his intrigues with <strong>the</strong> army favoured<br />

by his exceptional position. 223 But <strong>the</strong> extensive series<br />

<strong>of</strong> silver <strong>and</strong> copper coins, whe<strong>the</strong>r bearing <strong>the</strong> name<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ptolemy or that <strong>of</strong> Berenice, seems to imply a longer<br />

period <strong>of</strong> time than could be possible if <strong>the</strong>y were due<br />

to Magas, who was murdered when little more than a<br />
