A CHRONOLOGICAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE<br />

COINS OF CHIOS ;<br />

PART II.<br />

(Continued from p. 52. SEE PLATES XVIII, XIX.)<br />

INTRODUCTORY NOTE.<br />

SINCE <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first part <strong>of</strong> this study<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Numismatic</strong> Chronicle, <strong>and</strong> after <strong>the</strong> following<br />

pages were practically ready for <strong>the</strong> press, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

appeared in <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American <strong>Numismatic</strong><br />

<strong>Society</strong> a monograph by Miss A. Baldwin on <strong>the</strong><br />

Electrum <strong>and</strong> Silver Coins <strong>of</strong> Chios issued during <strong>the</strong><br />

sixth, fifth, <strong>and</strong> fourth centuries B.C.<br />

<strong>The</strong> author has here brought toge<strong>the</strong>r such a wealth<br />

<strong>of</strong> material, <strong>and</strong> stated her conclusions in so clear<br />

<strong>and</strong> concise a manner, that I felt on first seeing <strong>the</strong><br />

paper that it would be a work <strong>of</strong> supererogation to go<br />

over <strong>the</strong> same ground again. As <strong>the</strong> present article,<br />

however, is only a portion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole task that<br />

I have set myself, I have decided, with <strong>the</strong> kind permission<br />

<strong>and</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Editors, to entrust<br />

it to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Numismatic</strong> Chronicle as originally intended.<br />

In doing so I have now <strong>the</strong> advantage <strong>of</strong> Miss Baldwin's<br />

researches, which not only covered a wider field than my<br />

own, but record a greater number <strong>of</strong> types than mine<br />

do even from sources explored by us both. This is<br />

especially<br />

noticeable in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> didrachms<br />
