remaining bronze issues <strong>of</strong> Chios were probably struck<br />

from fixed dies.<br />

<strong>The</strong> weights <strong>of</strong> Nos. 46-7 are fairly constant in <strong>the</strong><br />

region <strong>of</strong> 20-52 grains (1-33 grammes), which is roughly<br />

<strong>the</strong> weight maintained by <strong>the</strong> small bronze coins <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> next period.<br />

PEEIOD VII. 412-334 B.C.<br />

It is a remarkable though perhaps not an ex-<br />

ceptional fact that <strong>the</strong> seventy odd years following<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> defeat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nians at Syracuse were,<br />

at one <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same time, some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most disastrous<br />

in <strong>the</strong> annals <strong>of</strong> Chios in ancient times, <strong>and</strong>, throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir course, <strong>the</strong> richest from<br />

a <strong>numismatic</strong> point <strong>of</strong> view. <strong>The</strong>re would be nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

object nor pr<strong>of</strong>it in trying<br />

changes<br />

to follow here <strong>the</strong> various<br />

<strong>of</strong> fortune in <strong>the</strong> state after <strong>the</strong> introduction<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spartan governor Pedaritos. Suffice it to say<br />

that between <strong>the</strong> oppression <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spartans within,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ravages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nians along <strong>the</strong> coasts,<br />

<strong>the</strong> accumulated wealth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two previous generations<br />

must have soon been dissipated. Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rival parties in <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> identified itself with one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> belligerents, <strong>the</strong> oligarchs helping <strong>the</strong> Spartans<br />

to defend <strong>the</strong> citadel, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> democrats giving all<br />

possible encouragement to <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nian raids. Almost<br />

every year saw a fresh revolution, as first one side<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r gained <strong>the</strong> upper h<strong>and</strong>. Finally,<br />

after <strong>the</strong> crowning defeat <strong>of</strong> Aegospotami, when <strong>the</strong><br />

last hopes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> democrats sank with <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nian<br />

ships, <strong>and</strong> J/he oligarchic captains were being honoured<br />

by statues at Delphi, 60 all civic independence seems to<br />
