ROYAL NUMISMATIC SOCIETY. 23<br />

<strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> a well-known artist whose paintings already<br />

adorned <strong>the</strong> walls <strong>of</strong> churches in his native city <strong>of</strong> Verona<br />

<strong>and</strong> in Ferrara, as well as those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Doge's Palace at Venice.<br />

In your work On <strong>the</strong> Portrait Medals <strong>of</strong> Italian Artists <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Renaissance, published for <strong>the</strong> Medici <strong>Society</strong> in 1912,<br />

you have pursued, with great success, a special branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subject, <strong>and</strong> have made an exhaustive collection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

material both in private <strong>and</strong> public possession.<br />

Your latest work, just issued from <strong>the</strong> Clarendon Press,<br />

on <strong>The</strong> Development <strong>of</strong> Arabic Numerals in Europe, is<br />

a model <strong>of</strong> scientific presentment <strong>and</strong> supplies a useful<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Koyal <strong>Numismatic</strong> <strong>Society</strong> had done me <strong>the</strong><br />

signal honour <strong>of</strong> awarding me <strong>the</strong> Medal for this year,<br />

my surprise <strong>and</strong> gratification were tempered with no<br />

small degree <strong>of</strong> confusion. In <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> your medallists<br />

are to be found <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> practically all <strong>the</strong> most dis-<br />

tinguished numismatists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last generation in Europe<br />

<strong>and</strong> in this country. Even for one whose modesty has<br />

become somewhat case-hardened by more than twenty years<br />

<strong>of</strong> service in a Government <strong>of</strong>fice, it is embarrassing to be<br />

introduced into such a company. Even if he accepts, as he<br />

is bound to accept, <strong>the</strong> verdict <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council as to his
