<strong>the</strong> 1149 <strong>of</strong> Hoveden's <strong>chronicle</strong> to <strong>the</strong> so-called "Duke's<br />

money " ; probably <strong>the</strong> Empress withdrew her name from<br />

<strong>the</strong> coinage in favour <strong>of</strong> her son's in <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> 1142<br />

when she ab<strong>and</strong>oned her claim to <strong>the</strong> throne <strong>and</strong> put forward<br />

<strong>the</strong> claim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> young Henry. (This paper is printed in<br />

safety ;<br />

this he has since presented to <strong>the</strong> British Museum.<br />

Mr. Henry Symonds, F.S.A., showed a fine series <strong>of</strong><br />

Anglo-Saxon <strong>and</strong> Norman coins <strong>of</strong> E<strong>the</strong>lstan (^E<strong>the</strong>lwine<br />

<strong>of</strong> Shaftesbury), Edgar (Bruninc <strong>of</strong> Norwich), Hardicanute<br />

(Godwine <strong>of</strong> Dorchester), Harold II (Dunning <strong>of</strong> Hastings),<br />

William I (Alnoth <strong>of</strong> Shaftesbury), <strong>and</strong> William II (legelric<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wareham).
