On this ground alone <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> Chios next to be<br />

described st<strong>and</strong>s out among<br />

all her o<strong>the</strong>r electrum<br />

coins as an unusual product <strong>of</strong> her mint, <strong>and</strong> helps to<br />

prove that <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> which it evidently formed<br />

part was <strong>the</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> peculiar circumstances.<br />

So far <strong>the</strong>re has been no evidence <strong>of</strong> any silver issue<br />

that could be looked upon as contemporary with <strong>the</strong><br />

Chian Revolt staters. <strong>The</strong> Vourla find seems to have<br />

proved that Clazomenae issued divisional pieces in<br />

silver to accompany her staters, <strong>and</strong> it has been shown<br />

that Lampsacus at least among<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cities did<br />

<strong>the</strong> same. 45 On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> tetrobols, that<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Gardner suggests for Chios, are unquestionably<br />

<strong>of</strong> later date.<br />

<strong>The</strong> electrum stater proposed for <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ionian Revolt is <strong>the</strong> following :<br />

curled in naturalistic manner; she wears<br />

with a separate conventionalized lock rising<br />

from crown <strong>of</strong> head <strong>and</strong> terminating in a<br />

tendril-like spiral ; <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r forepaw is<br />

raised <strong>and</strong> grasps a lotus-flower (?). <strong>The</strong> tail<br />

bears a tuft.<br />
