11. Obv. Silphium plant<br />

QUAESTIONES CYRENAICAE. 67<br />

with two whorls <strong>and</strong> three<br />

umbels ; in field 1. a seed with its pericarp,<br />

around, four dots placed<br />

Rev. Head <strong>of</strong> Gyrene 1. as above, but <strong>of</strong> different<br />

style ; in front KVPA, behind N A ^><br />

outwards ; dotted border ; circular incuse.<br />

JR. 0-6. Wt. 51 grs. Copenhagen (M. i. 116).<br />

12. Obv. Similar, but without seed.<br />

Rev. Head <strong>of</strong> Gyrene, <strong>of</strong> style similar to No. 11, but<br />

more advanced ; in dotted circle ; in incuse<br />

square,<br />

in <strong>the</strong> corners <strong>of</strong> which K V<br />

V d<br />

M. 0-55. Wt. 51-9 grs. B. M. = M. i. 115.<br />

<strong>The</strong> head on No. 12 has been described by Miiller<br />

as Apollo, 42 but <strong>the</strong>re seems no reason to consider it<br />

as different from that on No. 11, <strong>the</strong> inscription<br />

KVPANA on which, it may be suggested, refers to <strong>the</strong><br />

type as well as to <strong>the</strong> city. Parallel with <strong>the</strong>se coins,<br />

<strong>and</strong> linking up with <strong>the</strong> next group, is <strong>the</strong> series<br />

<strong>of</strong> drachms <strong>and</strong> hemidrachms bearing <strong>the</strong> types <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

liead <strong>of</strong> Ammon <strong>and</strong> silphium.<br />

13. Obv. Silphium plant.<br />

Rev. Head <strong>of</strong> bearded Ammon r. in dotted circle in<br />

incuse square, in corners <strong>of</strong> which K V<br />

B. M. /K. 0-6. Wt. 50 grs. V d<br />

<strong>The</strong> general arrangement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hair is like that <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> similar heads in <strong>the</strong> first group, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye though<br />

not so pronounced is still almost entirely full. On<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> truncation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neck is dotted.<br />

As a rule <strong>the</strong> silphium has no pair <strong>of</strong> umbels springing<br />

on ei<strong>the</strong>r side above <strong>the</strong> highest whorl. <strong>The</strong> absence<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se is a sign <strong>of</strong> early date, though <strong>the</strong> contrary<br />

does not hold.<br />

42 i. 115.<br />
