corners <strong>of</strong> which V I >l<br />

Paris. M. 0-6. Wt. 53 grs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> No. 15, which is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest<br />

<strong>of</strong> its class, lies in <strong>the</strong> presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong><br />

Ammon. It gives <strong>the</strong> only example I know <strong>of</strong> at<br />

Gyrene <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wig-like Egyptian treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

back hair, which is so noticeable a feature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> con-<br />

temporary coins assigned to Golgoi with <strong>the</strong> types<br />

obv. Hermes, rev. Head <strong>of</strong> Ammon. 43 This is <strong>the</strong> first<br />

appearance too <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> uraeus, which does not occur<br />

again for more than half a century.<br />

From this time <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> Barce <strong>and</strong> Euesperides<br />

are exactly like those <strong>of</strong> Gyrene, <strong>and</strong> can only be<br />

distinguished by <strong>the</strong> legends. <strong>The</strong> puzzling letters<br />

T <strong>and</strong> A, which appear on some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> drachms <strong>of</strong><br />

Barce, will be discussed later. 44<br />

This series <strong>of</strong> drachms leads into <strong>and</strong> overlaps with<br />

<strong>the</strong> second group <strong>of</strong> tetradrachms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period.<br />
