474 SIR ARTHUR EVANS.<br />

tinctly barbarous, seems to present a blundered version<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>odosius or Honorius. <strong>The</strong><br />

reverse, however, with XV in a wreath <strong>and</strong> AQ. below,<br />

is clear enough. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor McKenny Hughes, to whose<br />

kind permission <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> this piece is due,<br />

adds <strong>the</strong> information that it was found on <strong>the</strong><br />

kindly<br />

Upware ridge opposite Stretham, Cambs., toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with a silver piece (siliqua) <strong>of</strong> Julian II from <strong>the</strong><br />

Treves mint reading VOTIS V MVLTIS X. <strong>The</strong> coins<br />

lay with <strong>the</strong> remains <strong>of</strong> two skeletons, <strong>and</strong> each had<br />

served as one <strong>of</strong> Charon's obols.<br />

On <strong>the</strong>ir reverse <strong>the</strong>se coins show X <strong>and</strong> XV respectively<br />

within <strong>the</strong> usual laurel-wreath that elsewhere<br />

contains <strong>the</strong> enumeration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vota. <strong>The</strong>re can be<br />

no reasonable doubt that <strong>the</strong> figures in <strong>the</strong> present<br />

series have a similar signification, <strong>of</strong> which, indeed, no<br />

one familiar with <strong>the</strong> contemporary coinage would be<br />

for a moment in doubt. What remains uncertain is<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r we should regard <strong>the</strong>se all as decennial pieces,<br />

<strong>and</strong> see in <strong>the</strong> respective figures a reference to <strong>the</strong><br />

solution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Decennalia Vota <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> susception <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Quindecennalia, as in <strong>the</strong> common legend VOTIS<br />

X MVLTIS XV, or whe<strong>the</strong>r we should regard <strong>the</strong>m<br />

as representing two successive issues, one in honour <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Decennalia, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Quindecennalia. <strong>The</strong><br />

latter appears to be on <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>the</strong> more reasonable<br />

assumption.<br />

A figure <strong>of</strong> type F is given by Cohen in his section<br />

dealing with <strong>the</strong> Constantinian series reading VRBS<br />

ROMA. 60<br />

It is <strong>of</strong> similar small module, but <strong>the</strong><br />

weight, as usual, is not recorded. M. Feuardent, how-<br />
