322 SOME CYPKIOTE "ALEXANDERS".<br />

It is <strong>the</strong>refore not surprising to find its mint in active<br />

operation down to <strong>the</strong> great naval battle <strong>and</strong> siege<br />

<strong>of</strong> Salamis, in which Demetrios Poliorketes finally<br />

worsted <strong>the</strong> Ptolemaic forces, <strong>and</strong> obliged <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

evacuate <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>. 29<br />

E. T. NEWELL.<br />

29 Under Antigonid rule <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> formed a very important<br />

naval base <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir empire until its reconquest by Ptolemy in<br />

295 B.C. Antigonos, <strong>and</strong> later Demetrios, no doubt issued many<br />

coins, probably from <strong>the</strong> mint at Salamis. If so, <strong>the</strong> types must<br />

at first have been <strong>the</strong> usual Alex<strong>and</strong>rine ; <strong>the</strong> inscriptions, too, were<br />

in honour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Macedonian hero. As yet, however, <strong>the</strong> attribution<br />

<strong>of</strong> certain <strong>of</strong> such coins which might belong to this time <strong>and</strong> place<br />

is too doubtful to be hazarded here.
