Gold <strong>of</strong> 22 carats fine, <strong>the</strong> privy mark being <strong>the</strong><br />

Sun, was taken out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pyx, <strong>and</strong> consisted <strong>of</strong> unites,<br />

double-crowns, <strong>and</strong> crowns, amounting in coined<br />

moneys to 137.<br />

Silver moneys, with <strong>the</strong> same mark, consisted <strong>of</strong><br />

pieces <strong>of</strong> 5s., 2s. 6c?., Is., 6d., 2d., Id., <strong>and</strong> %d., amounting<br />

to 737.<br />

Oliver Cromwell's coins <strong>of</strong> 1656 were presumably<br />

not included in this pyx, as its contents bore <strong>the</strong><br />

Commonwealth privy mark only.<br />

CHARLES II.<br />

Shortly after <strong>the</strong> Restoration, st<strong>and</strong>ard trial pieces<br />

were again prepared by a jury <strong>of</strong> goldsmiths, who<br />

reported on 19 October, 1660, as to <strong>the</strong> accurate adjustment<br />

<strong>of</strong> three st<strong>and</strong>ards, viz. gold <strong>of</strong> 23 carats 3J grs.,<br />

gold <strong>of</strong> 22 carats, <strong>and</strong> silver. Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pieces was<br />

divided into six indented portions which were distri-<br />

buted to <strong>the</strong> warden <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> master-worker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mint, <strong>the</strong> wardens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Goldsmiths Company, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Treasury <strong>of</strong> Eeceipt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exchequer, for <strong>the</strong><br />

testing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> king's money.<br />

9 July, 1663. Assays <strong>and</strong> trial <strong>of</strong> moneys coined<br />

within <strong>the</strong> Tower between 20 July, 1660, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> day<br />

<strong>of</strong> trial, in accordance with an indenture dated 20 July,<br />

1660, <strong>and</strong> a warrant dated 19 January, 1662, for <strong>the</strong><br />

striking <strong>of</strong> groats <strong>and</strong> threepences which were not<br />

ordered by <strong>the</strong> indenture.<br />
