PYX TKIALS OF THE COMMONWEALTH, ETC. 347<br />

Crown, was taken out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pyx <strong>and</strong> consisted <strong>of</strong><br />

unites, double-crowns, <strong>and</strong> Britain crowns, amounting<br />

in coined moneys to 52.<br />

Silver moneys, with <strong>the</strong> same mark, consisted <strong>of</strong><br />

pieces <strong>of</strong> 2s. 6d., Is., 6d., 4d., 3d., 2d., Id., <strong>and</strong> %d. y<br />

amounting to 615.<br />

<strong>The</strong> pyx which was opened at this trial must have<br />

contained both types <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hammered gold coins <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> three main types <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hammered silver coins.<br />

4 July, 1664. Assays <strong>and</strong> trial <strong>of</strong> moneys coined<br />

between 6 February, 1662, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> trial, in<br />

accordance with <strong>the</strong> indenture <strong>of</strong> 20 July, 1660.<br />

No gold coins in this pyx.<br />

Silver coins consisted <strong>of</strong> pieces <strong>of</strong> 5s., 2s. 6d., Is., 2d.,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Id., amounting to 363.<br />

A privy mark is not mentioned in <strong>the</strong> record <strong>of</strong> this<br />

trial or in those <strong>of</strong> later dates. It should be observed<br />

that <strong>the</strong> period during which <strong>the</strong>se silver coins were<br />

struck overlaps <strong>the</strong> period covered by <strong>the</strong> trial <strong>of</strong><br />

9 July, 1663. <strong>The</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> silver piece <strong>of</strong> 5s.<br />

shows that some milled coins were tested for <strong>the</strong> first<br />

time on 4 July, 1664.<br />

4 August, 1669. Assays <strong>of</strong> gold moneys coined from<br />

30 December, 1663, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> silver moneys from 4 July,<br />

1664, until <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> trial; in accordance with (1) <strong>the</strong><br />

indenture <strong>of</strong> 20 July, 1660, (2) a warrant <strong>of</strong> 12 June,<br />

1667, authorizing <strong>the</strong> striking <strong>of</strong> gold <strong>and</strong> silver by<br />

<strong>the</strong> mill <strong>and</strong> press, (3) a warrant <strong>of</strong> 19 January, 1662,<br />

for striking groats <strong>and</strong> threepences, <strong>and</strong> (4) a warrant<br />

<strong>of</strong> 24 December, 1663, for <strong>the</strong> cutting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pound<br />

Troy <strong>of</strong> crown gold into 44 pieces <strong>and</strong> one half, each<br />

piece to pass for 20.9., <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> half for 10s.<br />
