SERIES I.<br />

<strong>The</strong> staters <strong>of</strong> this series form a group <strong>of</strong> five<br />

varieties, at least three <strong>of</strong> which are bound toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

by identical obverse dies. That <strong>the</strong>y all belong to<br />

a single mint is fur<strong>the</strong>rmore evident from <strong>the</strong>ir close<br />

community in style a style, moreover, which is unlike<br />

that <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er issues, except <strong>the</strong><br />

earliest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> staters already attributed to <strong>the</strong> neighbouring<br />

mint <strong>of</strong> Kition. <strong>The</strong> Nike on <strong>the</strong> reverses <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se Salaminian staters st<strong>and</strong>s on a base, <strong>and</strong> holds<br />

a naval st<strong>and</strong>ard, peculiar in that its crossbar is unusually<br />

thick, <strong>and</strong> its projections face downwards<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> upwards. In style this group <strong>of</strong> staters<br />

merges into <strong>the</strong> succeeding staters signed with <strong>the</strong><br />

rudder symbol. All <strong>the</strong>se staters are struck from<br />

adjusted dies (position f f), a practice peculiar at this<br />

early time only to Cyprus <strong>and</strong> Phoenicia. As we<br />

possess ample Alex<strong>and</strong>rine coinages with fixed dies<br />

for all <strong>the</strong> principal cities <strong>of</strong> Phoenicia, Cyprus alone<br />

remains ;<br />

while <strong>the</strong> attribution to this isl<strong>and</strong> is proved<br />

by <strong>the</strong> close similarity in style to <strong>the</strong> staters which for<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r reasons have been assigned to Kition.<br />

<strong>The</strong> accompanying tetradrachms <strong>and</strong> drachms are<br />

all signed with <strong>the</strong> bow symbol only. At first <strong>the</strong>ir
