4:6 J. MAVROGORDATO.<br />

Before leaving this period it will be as well just to<br />

mention <strong>the</strong> small pieces bearing a Sphinx in various<br />

positions on <strong>the</strong> obverse, <strong>and</strong> different types on <strong>the</strong><br />

reverse, which, from <strong>the</strong>ir style, may all be said to<br />

belong to <strong>the</strong> sixth century. M. Babelon has suggested<br />

(Traite,voiL ii, p. 1134) that <strong>the</strong>se coins may be alliance<br />

pieces between Chios <strong>and</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbouring<br />

cities. If we could be sure <strong>of</strong> this <strong>the</strong> coins in question<br />

ought to find <strong>the</strong>ir place here, but considering <strong>the</strong><br />

uncertainty that attends <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se doubletyped<br />

coins, I prefer not to go into it 42<br />

any fur<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chian st<strong>and</strong>ard, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> all, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> one bearing<br />

a Gorgoiieion on <strong>the</strong> reverse (Num. Chron., 1913,<br />

p. 268, PI. xiii. 9), is very unlike that <strong>of</strong> any known<br />

Chian issue.<br />

PERIOD IV. 500-478 B.C.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> outbreak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> revolt, as mentioned above,<br />

<strong>the</strong> tyrant Strattis was deposed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> oligarchy was<br />

restored in Chios under magistrates called o-rparr^yoi.<br />

It is in <strong>the</strong> highest degree probable that this revival <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> civic power was signalized in all <strong>the</strong> states <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

League by fresh issues <strong>of</strong> electrum coins.<br />

<strong>The</strong> staters <strong>of</strong> various types, but similar fabric, to<br />

which Head first drew attention (Num. Chron., 1887,<br />

p. 281), are now generally recognized as <strong>the</strong> coinage<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ionian Revolt. <strong>The</strong> papers already referred to<br />

by Pr<strong>of</strong>. P. Gardner <strong>and</strong> M. E. Jameson independently<br />

pointed to this event as <strong>the</strong> most likely source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

42 See above, p. 7, where attention is drawn to a note under<br />

"Miscellanea" in Num. Chron., 1913, giving all <strong>the</strong> facts relating<br />

to <strong>the</strong>se doubtful coins.
