unique pieces <strong>of</strong> Polyxenos, a king whose existence is as yet<br />

only au<strong>the</strong>nticated by <strong>the</strong>se two pieces. It does not seem<br />

superfluous in this connexion to quote Mr. Whitehead's<br />

reminder that "it is a mistake to suppose that <strong>the</strong> Greek<br />

princes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Panjab <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> North West Frontier were <strong>the</strong><br />

direct successors <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great". Alex<strong>and</strong>er, as<br />

a matter <strong>of</strong> fact, did not leave behind him any permanent<br />

settlements in India, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> second Greek invasion <strong>of</strong><br />

India, which left enduring monuments, came over a century<br />

after his death from <strong>the</strong> Seleukid Province <strong>of</strong> Bactriana.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second volume <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lahore Catalogue deals with<br />

<strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mughal Emperors, a subject to which<br />

Mr. Whitehead had already made many valuable contribu-<br />

tions.<br />

Mr. Walters has favoured us with a first communication<br />

describing rare <strong>and</strong> unpublished Roman coins in his collec-<br />

'<br />

tion. Among <strong>the</strong> most remarkable <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se is a medallion '<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nero <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> usual Ostia type but <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wholly unparalleled<br />

weight <strong>of</strong> four sesterces. Ano<strong>the</strong>r unique piece <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

Emperor, a sestertius presenting on its reverse Victory<br />

holding a palm-branch <strong>and</strong> a figure <strong>of</strong> Roma, bears a bust <strong>of</strong><br />

Nero crowned with a wreath <strong>of</strong> exceptional composition in<br />

which Mr. Hill recognizes <strong>the</strong> bay, olive, <strong>and</strong> pine, respectively<br />

representing <strong>the</strong> Delphian, Olympian, <strong>and</strong> Isthmian<br />

games.<br />

In a paper on <strong>the</strong> portraits <strong>of</strong> Empresses<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Con-<br />

stantinian Age, Monsieur Jules Maurice replies to Mr. Percy<br />

Webb's objections to his attribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins reading<br />

HELENA N f to a younger Helena, wife <strong>of</strong> Crispus. He<br />

cites Dr. Delbrueck's recent attribution <strong>of</strong> a bust in <strong>the</strong><br />

Museo dei Conservatori at Rome to St. Helena as new<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> her most characteristic coiffure with <strong>the</strong> broad<br />

woollen b<strong>and</strong> very different from <strong>the</strong> simple arrangement<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hair on coins bearing <strong>the</strong> legend HELENA N f. He<br />

shows that "<strong>the</strong>re are three altoge<strong>the</strong>r characteristic types<br />
