denominations <strong>of</strong> Rhodian weight, as Cyprus had been<br />

accustomed to <strong>the</strong> latter system for many years on<br />

account <strong>of</strong> its close commercial relations with <strong>the</strong><br />

great banking <strong>and</strong> trading<br />

centre <strong>of</strong> Rhodes. It has<br />

also been shown 24 that at this very time Ptolemy<br />

Soter was striking Attic tetradrachms <strong>and</strong> Rhodian<br />

drachms side by side in his mint at Alex<strong>and</strong>ria. On<br />

<strong>the</strong> death or deposition <strong>of</strong> Nikokreon, about 310 B.C.,<br />

Menelaos, <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> strategos for Cyprus <strong>of</strong><br />

"<br />

Ptolemy, succeeded to <strong>the</strong> kingdom ". He too struck<br />

local gold coins in addition to <strong>the</strong> regular Alex<strong>and</strong>er<br />

issues. It also seems likely that under his rule were<br />

issued <strong>the</strong> bronze coins which bear on <strong>the</strong>ir obverses<br />

<strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cypriote Aphrodite, 25 <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

reverses <strong>the</strong> Ptolemaic eagle <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> inscription<br />

PToAEMAloY. A point <strong>of</strong> close similarity between<br />

<strong>the</strong>se bronze coins <strong>and</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>ers which<br />

we have assigned to Salamis is <strong>the</strong> unusual way in which<br />

<strong>the</strong> hair is held back at <strong>the</strong> neck by a single rib<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Compare <strong>the</strong> stater No. 28 (PL XV. 5) with <strong>the</strong> abovementioned<br />

bronze coins. This would constitute ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cypriote origin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se particular Alex<strong>and</strong>er<br />

coins.<br />
