CHRONOLOGY OF THE COINS OF CHIOS. 27<br />

gating <strong>the</strong> two isl<strong>and</strong> states <strong>of</strong> Chios <strong>and</strong> Samos. <strong>The</strong><br />

oligarchic or aristocratic form <strong>of</strong> government continued<br />

at Chios down to <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> final extinction <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> League by Harpagus in 545 B.C.<br />

Since all autonomous coining <strong>of</strong> electrum must have<br />

ceased with <strong>the</strong> imposition <strong>of</strong> Persian rule under<br />

Cyrus, as Pr<strong>of</strong>. P. Gardner has conclusively shown, 36<br />

<strong>the</strong> task <strong>of</strong> fixing <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remaining Chian<br />

issues in this metal is considerably simplified. Three<br />

at least <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> known types still unrecorded here must,<br />

in consequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above, fall automatically into<br />

<strong>the</strong> present period. <strong>The</strong>y are none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m so old<br />

in style as <strong>the</strong> type last quoted, No. 3, nor are <strong>the</strong>y yet<br />

suitable for inclusion among <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ionian<br />

Revolt, about which <strong>the</strong>re will be more to say<br />

later on.<br />

As regards <strong>the</strong>ir individual arrangement it is <strong>of</strong><br />

course impossible to be positive, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> order in<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y are placed below is only intended to be<br />

mjectural. Still, by comparing <strong>the</strong>se three widely<br />

livergent types with <strong>the</strong> more or less contemporary<br />

diver didrachms, which afford a far less broken scheme<br />

>f development, I hope to be able to show that <strong>the</strong><br />

classes mutually support each o<strong>the</strong>r without neces-<br />

irily having been issued toge<strong>the</strong>r. It is possible <strong>of</strong><br />

>urse that some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> didrachms described under<br />

'eriod III may belong here, but in <strong>the</strong> present state<br />

)f our knowledge anything more definite than what<br />

am already proposing would be <strong>the</strong> merest guess-<br />

work.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is certainly no lack <strong>of</strong> material from this time<br />
