WHEN we consider <strong>the</strong> long <strong>and</strong> uninterrupted<br />

<strong>numismatic</strong> history <strong>of</strong> China, which covers a more<br />

extensive, continuous, <strong>and</strong> unbroken period than that<br />

<strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r country, it will perhaps come as a surprise<br />

to hear that <strong>the</strong>re is known but one series <strong>of</strong> Chinese<br />

coins where <strong>the</strong> principal inscription appears incised<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> in relief. We were so far only acquainted<br />

with its existence, since all o<strong>the</strong>r information, excepting<br />

<strong>the</strong> value, had been hi<strong>the</strong>rto lacking. Fur<strong>the</strong>r par-<br />
