CHRONOLOGY OF THE COINS OF CHIOS. 371<br />

<strong>The</strong> electrum stater referred to above may be<br />

described as follows :<br />

31. Obv. Sphinx <strong>of</strong> early fine style seated 1. on plain<br />

exergual line, raising fur<strong>the</strong>r forepaw ; wing<br />

curled in semi-conventionalized manner ;<br />

hair<br />

rolled. In front stoppered amphora, with ball<br />

at point, surmounted by bunch <strong>of</strong> grapes which<br />

hangs from vine-wreath encircling <strong>the</strong> type <strong>and</strong><br />

is touched by Sphinx's upraised paw.<br />

[PL XVIII. 9.]<br />

No. 24. This is <strong>the</strong> earliest didrachm showing <strong>the</strong><br />

bunch <strong>of</strong> grapes <strong>of</strong> which I have been able to obtain<br />

a cast, <strong>and</strong> it is also <strong>the</strong> only one <strong>of</strong> its type that<br />

I have seen. In <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>. Pozzi, <strong>of</strong> Paris,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is ano<strong>the</strong>r early type which may possibly be<br />

a trifle older. It has <strong>the</strong> letters XIO in <strong>the</strong> depressions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reverse which were noted in Nos. 17 <strong>and</strong> 20 <strong>of</strong><br />

Period III. Miss Baldwin shows two more specimens<br />

<strong>of</strong> this type, <strong>and</strong> also three intermediate types between /<br />

it <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> next (Nos. 8, 9, <strong>and</strong> 11-14, PL iii).<br />

Nos. 25-7. <strong>The</strong>se types may be supposed to have<br />

followed each o<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> order given. This is only<br />

conjectural, <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y do not represent all<br />

<strong>the</strong> known varieties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir class by any means. But<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are typical <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal changes in <strong>the</strong> design,<br />

which are mostly unimportant. <strong>The</strong> eye <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sphinx<br />

from No. 26 onwards will be observed to be correctly<br />

drawn in pr<strong>of</strong>ile. <strong>The</strong> flans seem to have become<br />

flatter as time went on. No. 25 is a very rare variety,<br />

<strong>and</strong> No. 27 is unique to <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> my belief. <strong>The</strong>re
