<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city under Ptolemaic supremacy, while mono-<br />

grams are used for <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coinage.<br />

SEEIES III.<br />

This series is introduced by <strong>the</strong> tetradrachm, No. 15<br />

(PI. XIV. 7), which constitutes <strong>the</strong> transition between<br />

Series II <strong>and</strong> III. In style it is closer to <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong><br />

Series III, but in <strong>the</strong> placing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inscription<br />

AAE3EANAPOY BA5IAEHS it resembles <strong>the</strong> tetradrachms<br />

<strong>of</strong> Series II. <strong>The</strong> stater which is placed with<br />

it may still belong to Series II. In style it is identical<br />

with certain specimens <strong>of</strong> No. 11 (compare PL XIV. 3),<br />

but in <strong>the</strong> magistrate's name in <strong>the</strong> field it has more<br />

affinity with <strong>the</strong> staters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present series.<br />

This series consists <strong>of</strong> staters, tetradrachms, <strong>and</strong><br />

drachms in considerable abundance, all bearing <strong>the</strong><br />

mint-mark rudder, <strong>and</strong>, in addition, two monograms,<br />

though it would be tempting to see in N< <strong>and</strong> M or fjsl<br />

<strong>the</strong> respective names <strong>of</strong> Nikokreon 22 <strong>and</strong> Menelaos. 23<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Alex<strong>and</strong>er coins it would seem that<br />

Alongside<br />

Nikokreon also struck <strong>the</strong> well-known staters <strong>and</strong><br />

Ehodian didrachms <strong>and</strong> drachms bearing his own name<br />

<strong>and</strong> types. <strong>The</strong>se were probably intended for use in<br />

Cyprus only. <strong>The</strong>re is nothing strange in <strong>the</strong> cur-<br />
