QUAESTIONES CYRENAICAE. 139<br />

an ancient Greek goddess as Studniczka argues, at least<br />

her sphere was wider than that <strong>of</strong> a mere city-eponym.<br />

This well-marked type <strong>of</strong> head with <strong>the</strong> curious arrangement<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hair occurs, it is true, on later gold coins<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same denomination, bearing <strong>the</strong> signature I A,<br />

presumably <strong>the</strong> Cyrenaean magistrate IA3HN, but it<br />

is also found on <strong>the</strong> following which belong to <strong>the</strong><br />

close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second or beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third period<br />

at Barce.<br />

both sides is not unusual but on <strong>the</strong> obverse <strong>the</strong>re seem<br />

not <strong>the</strong> obverse inscription refer closely to <strong>the</strong> type<br />

<strong>and</strong> give us here <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a nymph Barce made to<br />

match Gyrene ?<br />

Nos. 56-9 are <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> a long series <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

normal weight seems to be 13-13-5, though<br />

some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> earliest, e.g. No. 58, weigh a little more. It is<br />

obvious that this weight can be very easily related<br />

to <strong>the</strong> hemidrachms, Nos. 54 <strong>and</strong> 55, <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> drachm<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last period. It is exactly a quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Samian drachm <strong>of</strong> 53-4 max., so that <strong>the</strong> coins are<br />

trihemiobols. Thus <strong>the</strong> early gold series consisted <strong>of</strong><br />
