QUAESTIONES CYKENAICAE. 95<br />

tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> AKEIO$ at Barce, 7:> <strong>and</strong> 011 <strong>the</strong> series<br />

<strong>of</strong> fourth-century gold triobols at Gyrene. Its use on<br />

triobols suggests that it has a practical significance.<br />

Besides <strong>the</strong> weights <strong>of</strong> those here published, 15, 12-7,<br />

11-3, o<strong>the</strong>rs weigh 13-5, 13-2, 15-3, <strong>and</strong> 14. 70 <strong>The</strong> lowest<br />

weight 11-3 (our No. 4.2) can be partially explained<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> coin is restruck. Now an obol<br />

by<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Samian drachm <strong>of</strong> 53 grs. would weigh 8-8, <strong>and</strong><br />

a trihemiobol consequently 13-2, which is <strong>the</strong> central<br />

point round which <strong>the</strong> weights <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se coins gravitate.<br />

If we can assume <strong>the</strong>m to be trihemiobols we have an<br />

explanation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> type such as may be <strong>of</strong>fered in <strong>the</strong><br />

case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gold triobols <strong>the</strong> denomination is indicated<br />

<strong>the</strong>reby as <strong>the</strong> triple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unit.<br />

Here <strong>the</strong> series <strong>of</strong> Barce practically ends, save for<br />

unimportant copper. Only a very few silver coins can<br />

be noted<br />

be dated later than c. 390. Among <strong>the</strong>m may<br />

<strong>the</strong> following.<br />

44. Olv. Head <strong>of</strong> bearded Ammon r., laureate, hair <strong>and</strong><br />

beard free ; behind <strong>the</strong> neck, ear <strong>of</strong> corn ;<br />

linear border.<br />

Rev. Silphium with two whorls <strong>and</strong> five umbels ; to<br />

r., BAP } ; triple circle border.<br />

B.M. JR. 1. Wt. 194-9 grs. Samian tetradrachm.<br />

This coin cannot be much earlier than <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> fourth century ; <strong>the</strong> style is comparatively weak,<br />

<strong>and</strong> linear borders are found at Cyrene on coins <strong>of</strong><br />

that period, those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magistrates 0EYEIAEY$<br />

<strong>and</strong> IAONO. <strong>The</strong> peculiar coin at Berlin (from <strong>the</strong><br />

Fox collection) 7T is best mentioned later. 78 Gold coins<br />
