226 HENRY SYMONDS.<br />

only one mint- mark is known. I notice, however, that<br />

some examples omit E. R. at <strong>the</strong> sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shield ;<br />

this may or may not be a sign <strong>of</strong> distinction between<br />

<strong>the</strong> two classes.<br />

On 15 November, 1552, <strong>the</strong> Council ordered payment<br />

<strong>of</strong> two <strong>and</strong> a half years' wages, due at Michaelmas <strong>the</strong>n<br />

last, to be made to Henry Coldwell, " late graver," <strong>and</strong><br />

on 24 November a letter was sent to Oliver Daubeney<br />

telling him to retain 1,200 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> money accruing to<br />

<strong>the</strong> executors <strong>of</strong> Martin Pirry. This is <strong>the</strong> first intima-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> under-treasurer's death. Apparently <strong>the</strong><br />

mint ceased working until 27 December, 1552, when<br />

a signet bill authorized <strong>the</strong> surviving <strong>of</strong>ficers to coin<br />

8,000, notwithst<strong>and</strong>ing a restraint previously sent to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord-Deputy. (Hatfield MSS., vol. i, p. 106.)<br />

I have now shown that <strong>the</strong> third, <strong>and</strong> last, issue<br />

<strong>of</strong> Edward's reign which bore his own name <strong>and</strong> titles.<br />

It will be remembered that <strong>the</strong> King, in a letter <strong>of</strong><br />

26 November, 1551, promised to amend <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> moneys circulating in Irel<strong>and</strong>. An endeavour to<br />

redeem this pledge was made in <strong>the</strong> following May<br />

by a request for a certificate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proportions, &c.,<br />

requisite for silver <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>of</strong> 9 oz. fine, as<br />

had been used (in Engl<strong>and</strong>) in <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Henry VIII.<br />

This resulted in <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> a draft commission<br />

to Pirry, Daubeney, <strong>and</strong> Williams, which is to be found<br />

in volume 4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Irish State Papers <strong>of</strong> Edward VI.<br />

<strong>The</strong> document is, <strong>of</strong> course, undated, <strong>and</strong> has many<br />

alterations <strong>and</strong> corrections. It proposed to order two<br />

coinages, (1) <strong>of</strong> 9 oz. fine silver, consisting <strong>of</strong> 5s., 25. 6d.,<br />

Is., <strong>and</strong> 6d. "lawful money <strong>of</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> ", <strong>and</strong> (2) <strong>of</strong> 3oz.<br />

fine, in pence, halfpence, <strong>and</strong> farthings. <strong>The</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers
