<strong>The</strong> minute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council authorizing <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> warrant is dated on <strong>the</strong> previous day, 24 January.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is at this time a reference to Martin Pirry, or<br />

Pery, who will be much in <strong>the</strong> foreground <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> picture<br />

during <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Edward VI. On 26 January,<br />

1541-2, Sir William Paget writes to Henry VIII from<br />

Paris concerning Pery, who had fled from Engl<strong>and</strong> on<br />

.an accusation <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r false clipping or false coining,<br />

<strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong>n living at Rouen. Paget was doubtful<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> fugitive was included in <strong>the</strong> Pardon Act<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last Parliament, <strong>and</strong> asked for <strong>the</strong> King's<br />

directions as to Pery's fur<strong>the</strong>r employment (Letters<br />

<strong>and</strong> Papers). It will shortly become evident that<br />

Pery was restored to favour.<br />

THE THIRD COINAGE, 1544.<br />

<strong>The</strong> pro<strong>of</strong> that <strong>the</strong>re was in this year a new order<br />

to govern <strong>the</strong> making <strong>of</strong> Irish money is solely based<br />

upon an account furnished by Sir Martin Bowes,<br />

whose <strong>of</strong>fice was now that <strong>of</strong> an under-treasurer at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tower. <strong>The</strong> title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> document recites that<br />

Martin Bowes, Stephen Vaughan, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs had been<br />

directed by a commission <strong>of</strong> 14 May, 36 Henry VIII<br />
