<strong>the</strong> disgust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> her admission to Westminster ;<br />

Londoners at her dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> a subsidy, refusal to grant<br />

<strong>the</strong> good laws <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confessor, &c. ; <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong><br />

Queen Matilda <strong>and</strong> William <strong>of</strong> Ypres with an army<br />

raised in Kent, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir admission on June 24 by <strong>the</strong><br />

Londoners; <strong>the</strong> flight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empress; her siege <strong>of</strong><br />

Winchester on July 31, <strong>and</strong> her own defeat by <strong>the</strong><br />

army <strong>of</strong> William <strong>of</strong> Ypres <strong>and</strong> escape (Sept. 14) through<br />

<strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong><br />

Ludgershall <strong>and</strong> Devizes to Gloucester ;<br />

Robert <strong>of</strong> Gloucester <strong>and</strong> his exchange for Stephen ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> stay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empress at Oxford for <strong>the</strong> winter <strong>of</strong><br />

1141-2, <strong>and</strong> her move to Devizes in March, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sending <strong>of</strong> an embassy to urge her husb<strong>and</strong> to come<br />

over; <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> Duke Henry at Bristol in late<br />

autumn ; <strong>the</strong> siege <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empress in Oxford by Stephen<br />

from September to December 1142, <strong>and</strong> her flight at<br />

Christmas to Abingdon <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>nce to Wallingford,<br />

which practically closes her active career in <strong>the</strong> war,<br />

which at this period commences to be fought on behalf<br />

<strong>of</strong> her son's claim to <strong>the</strong> throne instead <strong>of</strong> her own.<br />

<strong>The</strong> coins are known <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bristol, Canterbury,<br />

Lincoln, London, Stamford, <strong>and</strong> perhaps Winchester,<br />

mints. At Winchester coins might have been issued<br />

in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empress after her hallowing as<br />

Lady <strong>and</strong> Queen on March 3, 1141. She was at London<br />

only a few days ; but it is perhaps not impossible for
