178 E. S. G. ROBINSON.<br />

by Dressel 148 with <strong>the</strong> types Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Ammon<br />

<strong>of</strong> this<br />

in <strong>the</strong> British Museum<br />

facing, Rev. Head <strong>of</strong> Pallas r. <strong>The</strong> weight<br />

piece is 6grs., while a specimen<br />

weighs 4-4 grs., <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> denomination is <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

probably an Attic hemiobol. <strong>The</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Attic<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard implies <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> I"IOAIAN0EY^ or later,<br />

a dating which is confirmed by <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> copper<br />

14 '<br />

issue <strong>of</strong> exactly similar types published by Babelon.<br />

<strong>The</strong> shortage <strong>of</strong> small silver coins towards <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> period is doubtless to be explained by <strong>the</strong> intro-<br />

duction <strong>of</strong> a copper coinage, at first unsigned, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n<br />

(in early Ptolemaic times) with magistrates' names.<br />

That <strong>the</strong>se copper issues did not in general begin till<br />

<strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period is indicated by <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

silphium, which corresponds to that on <strong>the</strong> FIOAIAN-<br />

0EYS-EIAnNOS-eEY4>EIAEYS silver, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />

lack <strong>of</strong> any correspondence between magistrates' names<br />

on <strong>the</strong> two metals. As it is difficult to divide <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>and</strong> as most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m belong to <strong>the</strong> third century, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are best considered later.<br />

149 Rec. Num., 1885, p. 398, No. 6, PI. xv. 6. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British<br />
