174: E. S. G. KOBINSON.<br />

Unfortunately <strong>the</strong> inscription<br />

on <strong>the</strong> reverse is not<br />

clear: <strong>the</strong> A is certain, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding letter has<br />

been read as a B by Muller, who regards it as <strong>the</strong> initial,<br />

thus producing <strong>the</strong> same inscription on both sides.<br />

On a close examination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coin I think HPA may<br />

be <strong>the</strong> true reading. <strong>The</strong> following would support this<br />

view.<br />

81. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Ammon bearded r. ; dotted border.<br />

Eei\ Ram r. ; above HPAKAEIA.<br />

Paris. M. 04. Wt. 187 grs. = M., No. 343.<br />

No. 81 was published by Muller doubtfully as <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> town Heraclea, 138 but <strong>the</strong> last letter is certainly<br />

a A, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> inscription must <strong>the</strong>refore be a name ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>re would be room for an ethnic on <strong>the</strong> obverse in<br />

front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> face (but on this unique specimen that<br />

portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field is <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> flan). <strong>The</strong> type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ram is proved for Barce as well by <strong>the</strong> archaic silver<br />

drachm 139 as by our No. 80. <strong>The</strong>se two bronze coins<br />

would belong to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth or <strong>the</strong> beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third century.<br />

Euesperides,<br />

Later Issues.<br />

<strong>The</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> Euesperides, like that <strong>of</strong> Barce, practically<br />

ceases during <strong>the</strong> fourth century. <strong>The</strong>re is, how-<br />

ever, in <strong>the</strong> Turin Library 140 a tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> Samian<br />

weight, which to judge by <strong>the</strong> triple border U1 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

obverse <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> full inscription EYE^FIEPITAN should<br />

la M. i. 343.<br />

139 M., Suppl., 290 A (Brit. Mus.).<br />

140 Imho<strong>of</strong> in Z.f. JV., vii. p. 30, No. 3. I have been unable to<br />

get a cast <strong>of</strong> this coin.<br />

141 Cf. <strong>the</strong> triple border on <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> Barce with <strong>the</strong> facing<br />

head under AKESIOS (M. i. 321).
