gr<strong>and</strong>sons <strong>of</strong> Tiberius, appear also on <strong>the</strong> first brass<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regular Roman series, <strong>the</strong>ir heads in two cornua-<br />

copiae<br />

with a caduceus between <strong>the</strong>m.207<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were<br />

born after October 10, A. r>. 19, <strong>and</strong> Grermanicus (<strong>the</strong><br />

knowledge even <strong>of</strong> whose name we owe to <strong>the</strong>se pieces<br />

<strong>and</strong> to a Cypriote inscription) died toward <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />

23, so it is possible to narrow down <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

coins to <strong>the</strong> four years 19-23. As already stated, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are <strong>the</strong> last coins which can with any certainty be<br />

given to <strong>the</strong> Cyrenaica. Later attributions are discussed<br />

<strong>and</strong> dismissed by Muller (i, pp. 171-4).<br />

PTOLEMAIC ISSUES AT GYRENE.<br />

A note may be added on <strong>the</strong> coins struck at Gyrene<br />

in <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ptolemies. During <strong>the</strong> reign<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ptolemy Soter, as has been long recognized, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are, outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unmistakable KYPANAION flTO-<br />

AEMAin group (Svor., Nos. 61-4), certain monograms<br />

common to <strong>the</strong> Ptolemaic <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> autonomous<br />

coinage <strong>of</strong> Gyrene; for example IK**, IP, KE. (Svor.,<br />

Nos. 65-72, PL iii. 6-12, M. ; Nos. 102, 147, 151, 152,<br />

PL iv. 3, 4, v. 1, 2, 4. A/".) <strong>The</strong> copper Svoronos assigns<br />

to <strong>the</strong> years immediately succeeding Magas' re-occupa-<br />

tion, 308-304 ; but, as has been suggested above, <strong>the</strong><br />

corresponding Cyrenaean silver with <strong>the</strong>se monograms,<br />

as well as <strong>the</strong> corresponding Ptolemaic gold, seems<br />

certainly later than 300. It is also possible that <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> silver drachms with <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong><br />

group <strong>of</strong> copper<br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er (Svor., Nos. 49-58, PL ii. 27-34) were issued<br />

from <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> Gyrene. <strong>The</strong> similarity in style<br />

between <strong>the</strong> heads, especially on Svor., Nos. 51 <strong>and</strong> 57<br />

207 Rev. Num., 1911, pp. 347-9, PI. viii. 10 (on p. 349 <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Germanicus is given as 28 instead ot 23).
