1. ON A LARGE HOARD OF LATE ROMAN SILVER<br />

COINS PROM THE NORTH MENDIP, INCLUDING<br />

SlLIQUAE STRUCK AT AUGUSTA (LoNDINIUM).<br />

IT is well known that <strong>the</strong> "West <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> especially<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mendips <strong>and</strong> adjoining region has been <strong>the</strong> scene<br />

<strong>of</strong> repeated finds <strong>of</strong> considerable hoards <strong>of</strong> late Roman<br />

coins, mostly silver, dating<br />

from <strong>the</strong> last half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fourth century <strong>of</strong> our era or <strong>the</strong> first years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> most recent is that from G-rovely Wood, Wilts an<br />

,<br />

account <strong>of</strong> which was laid before this <strong>Society</strong> by<br />

Mr. Hill in 1906, 1<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> silver coins from<br />

Constantius II to Arcadius.<br />

A general survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Somerset hoards has been<br />

given by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Haverfield in <strong>the</strong> Victoria County<br />

History? <strong>and</strong> several have already been referred to by<br />

my fa<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> East Harptree find<br />

which he laid before this <strong>Society</strong> in 1888. It contained<br />

1,496 silver pieces, <strong>the</strong> dates <strong>of</strong> which extend from<br />

Num. Chron., 1906, pp. 329 seqq.<br />
