ethnic, <strong>and</strong> those with nei<strong>the</strong>r magistrate's name nor<br />

ethnic. I am inclined to think that many coins which<br />

at first sight seem to fall into [one or o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

classes, especially <strong>the</strong> second, do so only through <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

condition ;<br />

in fact, I can find no tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> which<br />

it can be definitely stated that it has no inscription on<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r side. Of three in <strong>the</strong> British Museum which<br />

seem to be such, <strong>the</strong> first is in very worn condition, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r two (<strong>the</strong> heads on which greatly resemble<br />

some <strong>of</strong> those on coins <strong>of</strong> Nikis) are so badly struck that<br />

though <strong>the</strong>re is no ethnic <strong>the</strong> place where we should<br />

expect <strong>the</strong> magistrate's name is <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> coin. Of those<br />

with a magistrate's name, but no ethnic, we may<br />

reasonably assume that when <strong>the</strong> name occurs also defi-<br />

nitely at Gyrene or at Barce <strong>the</strong> coin may be assigned<br />

to that place. When <strong>the</strong> name does not occur else-<br />

where, <strong>the</strong> question becomes practically insoluble: <strong>of</strong><br />

such coins three are worthy <strong>of</strong> discussion.<br />

This piece has already been published by Miiller, 80<br />

who regarded <strong>the</strong> inscription on <strong>the</strong> reverse as being<br />

ui, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore assigned <strong>the</strong> coin to <strong>the</strong> Macae, a<br />

Libyan<br />

lower letter is really a double struck T (retrograde),<br />

<strong>and</strong> with that vital letter gone Miiller's construction<br />

tribe. But a closer examination shows that <strong>the</strong><br />
