seen this coin, thinks that <strong>the</strong> tail is possibly an<br />

engraver's blunder ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a small kink in <strong>the</strong> down-<br />

stroke, <strong>and</strong> he may be right. If PA be correct a parallel<br />

for <strong>the</strong> difference in size between <strong>the</strong> two letters may<br />

be found at Croton itself (though not at this period) in<br />

A/\A <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> later Herakles reverse type.<br />

I have not succeeded in finding a specimen <strong>of</strong> this<br />

coin from a different die.<br />

spread ; below, to 1., crab in ex. <strong>and</strong> ; around to<br />

r., BOI$ KOY ; plain exergual line; linear<br />

Coins with <strong>the</strong> first three letters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magistrate's<br />

name are well known, but I can only find this variety<br />

mentioned in G-arrucci, Monete d'ltalia, where <strong>the</strong><br />

description on p. 151 does not agree with <strong>the</strong> illustra-<br />

tion, PL CIX. 28. In <strong>the</strong> illustration a small eagle<br />

with spread wings takes <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crab seen on<br />

<strong>the</strong> McCleaii specimen.<br />

is due to Mr. E. S. G-. Robinson. <strong>The</strong> coin must refer<br />

to <strong>the</strong> events <strong>of</strong> 453 B.C. when Sybaris, destroyed by
