higher up on <strong>the</strong> flan, revealing on ei<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

base <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stalk a letter, <strong>of</strong> which a corner may be<br />

seen on <strong>the</strong> Museum specimen. <strong>The</strong>se letters, though<br />

largely formed, are straggling <strong>and</strong> very uncertain:<br />

<strong>the</strong>y seem to resemble T E, but <strong>the</strong> lowest bar <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> E <strong>and</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> T are <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> coin. In connexion<br />

with this piece ano<strong>the</strong>r coin may be studied.<br />

In connexion with Nos. 17 <strong>and</strong> 18, on which <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> Euesperides has already been recognized by<br />

Muller, 45 it is necessary to go closely into <strong>the</strong> history<br />

<strong>and</strong> early <strong>numismatic</strong>s <strong>of</strong> that city.<br />

<strong>The</strong> earliest coins attributable to this, <strong>the</strong> western-<br />

most <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> cities <strong>of</strong> Cyrenaica, are <strong>the</strong> following :<br />
