of two years. Such students are entitled to make application<br />

in writing to the Progress Review Committee, within five<br />

working days from the date of the letter. They will not be<br />

permitted to re-enrol until the outcome of their application<br />

is known.<br />

Students who do not submit a letter of application by the<br />

due date will be automatically excluded for a period of two<br />

years.<br />

No student will be excluded from the Division of Science,<br />

Engineering and Design without first having been granted an<br />

interview with the relevant Progress Review Committee<br />

Process of appeal<br />

Upon receipt of a written application from a student, the<br />

Chair and Secretary of the relevant Progress Review<br />

Committee, on behalf of the Committee, will review the<br />

contents of the letter and decide whether it will be necessary<br />

to interview the student.<br />

Additional information from appropriate academic staff<br />

9 about the student's academic work may be sought by the<br />

Progress Review Committee before a decision is made.<br />

Students will be advised in writing whether their application<br />

has been accepted without interview, or whether an<br />

interview with the relevant Progress Review Committee is<br />

required.<br />

Powers<br />

After considering any application, the Progress Review<br />

Committee will take one of these courses of action:<br />

5' accept the student's application and allow the student to<br />

re-enrol without conditions;<br />

accept the student's application but place conditions<br />

upon the student's enrolment in the following semester;<br />

require the student to take leave of absence for a<br />

specified period; or<br />

exclude the student from the Division of Science,<br />

Engineering and Design for a period of two academic<br />

years.<br />

Enrolment conditions<br />

The academic record of students who have had conditions<br />

imposed will be reviewed by the relevant Progress Review<br />

Committee at the end of the following semester and a<br />

decision made to either:<br />

permit the student to continue studying without further<br />

condition/s: or<br />

impose further condition/s on the student for an<br />

additional semester; or<br />

require the student to present to the Committee the<br />

reasons why the student should not be excluded from<br />

the course for a period of two academic years. If these<br />

reasons are not accepted, then the student will be<br />

excluded for a period of two academic years.<br />

Appeals against decisions of Progress<br />

Review Committees<br />

The regulations for such appeals are contained in the<br />

University Student Assessment and Appeals Regulations<br />

(Refer to the chapter Procedures and Regulations in the<br />

<strong>Handbook</strong>).<br />

Period of exclusion<br />

Students who are excluded from any course in the Division<br />

of Science, Engineering and Design will not be permitted to<br />

re-enrol for a period of two academic years. After that<br />

period students may re-apply for admission to their course.<br />

2. Assessment irregularity<br />

Cheating or plagiarism, that is the action or practice of<br />

taking and using as one's own, the thoughts, writings or<br />

other work of someone else with the intent to deceive,<br />

constitutes an irregularity as described under Examination<br />

Description of the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Assessment Regulations.<br />

Such an action is a major infringement of the University's<br />

academic values. It is essential that students understand that<br />

. plagiarism<br />

or cheating shall be considered to have occurred<br />

a computer program substantially written by someone<br />

else (either another student, a previous student or the<br />

author of a publication) is presented as the student's<br />

own work:<br />

a paragraph, and even sentences, in essays which are<br />

written by someone else are not enclosed in quotation<br />

marks and accompanied by full reference to source;<br />

work of someone else is paraphrased and is not<br />

appropriately attributed and referenced;
