NO89 Graduate Diploma in Writing<br />

The Graduate Diploma in Writing is designed to introduce<br />

students to the range of skills required of a professional writer.<br />

The course is designed for those who intend to work (or<br />

are already working) in fields which require a high<br />

competence in written communication, e.g. writers in<br />

commerce, industry and community groups, or freelance<br />

writers. Specifically, the course is designed to provide both<br />

a theoretical base and a range of skills applicable to a wide<br />

range of writing activities; to provide knowledge of and<br />

experience in the analysis of writing; to provide experience<br />

in presentation and marketing of manuscripts; to provide<br />

students with the practical and theoretical ability to<br />

undertake a substantial piece of independent writing.<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

Applicants should hold a degree from a recognised tertiary<br />

institution, or a qualification approved as equivalent, or<br />

equivalent experience.<br />

Course structure<br />

The course entails two semesters of full-time study or four<br />

semesters part-time. The graduate diploma consists of six<br />

subjects: two core subjects (AL400 and AL401) and four<br />

elective subjects. The two core subjects involve two hours<br />

per fortnight over two semesters. Each elective subject<br />

involves three hours of coursework per week per semester.<br />

The Master of Business (Information Technology) involves<br />

four years of part-time study.<br />

Course objectives<br />

This course builds on the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Management Systems to provide additional management<br />

and business knowledge for students. The primary aim is to<br />

enhance the participants' ability to function as top level<br />

managers, advisers and consultants to industry and<br />

government. Emphasis is placed upon: ,<br />

understanding the business potential of the latest<br />

developments and innovations in information<br />

technology;<br />

forecasting potential information technology trends for<br />

organisations;<br />

selecting, evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of<br />

information technology solutions;<br />

planning and controlling the changes brought about in<br />

organisations by the introduction of strategically<br />

important systems; and<br />

conducting research into an area of information<br />

technology selected by the student.<br />

The Graduate Diploma in Management Systems forms the<br />

first two years of the Master of Business (Information<br />

Technology). Candidates in that course wishing to proceed<br />

to the Master of Business (Information Technology) should<br />

Admission requirements<br />

Entrance requirements are as specified for the Graduate<br />

Diploma in Management Systems.<br />

For progression from the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Management Systems to the third year of the Master of<br />

Business course, students would normally be expected to<br />

have attained an average of at least credit throughout their<br />

Graduate Diploma in Management Systems studies.<br />

Students with honours degrees in business or computer<br />

science may be granted advanced standing by exemption<br />

from avprovriate subiects. Provision is also made for<br />

transfer of subject credits to, and from, other cooperating<br />

institutions in Melbourne for approved equivalent course<br />

content.<br />

This is a four year part-time degree by coursework and<br />

minor thesis. The first two years are the same as for the<br />

Graduate Diploma in Organisation Behaviour; year three<br />

comprises a further four coursework subjects and the final
