School awarded that mark. The report from<br />

the Head of School shall be mailed to the<br />

student's semester address shown in the<br />

University's records within 20 working days<br />

of receipt of the student's written request in<br />

accordance with section 16.2.<br />

16.7 A student may make a written appeal against<br />

the outcome of the Assessment Review,<br />

sought under Section 16.2.<br />

The student must lodge the written appeal,<br />

clearly stating the basis of the appeal, with<br />

the Academic Registrar, not later than ten<br />

working days after the date of the written<br />

advice received under Section 16.6. In the<br />

letter of appeal the student shall include the<br />

grounds of the appeal. The letter of appeal<br />

shall be from the student and shall follow<br />

the format described below:<br />

16.8 Where the Academic Registrar or nominee is<br />

not satisfied that the basis for appeal has<br />

been clearly stated, he/she shall seek further<br />

clarification in writing from the appellant.<br />

The appeal may not be rejected at this point<br />

but must proceed ultimately to the Appeals<br />

Committee.<br />

16.9 Assessment Review Appeals Committee<br />

All appeals will be presented to the<br />

Assessment Review Appeals Committee.<br />

16.9.1 The Committee will comprise:<br />

a) The Vice-Chancellor's nominee<br />

who will act as Chair;<br />

b) President of the Student Union,<br />

or nominee; and<br />

c) A member of the academic staff<br />

of the <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

Division of the University<br />

chosen by the Chair of<br />

Academic Board. The person so<br />

chosen shall be from a School<br />

other than that in which the<br />

student has been taught.<br />

Representation of both genders<br />

should be attempted wherever<br />

practicable and achievable.<br />

The Academic Registrar (or<br />

nominee) will attend and act as<br />

Secretary.<br />

16.9.2 The written report, compiled by the<br />

Head of School under section 16.6<br />

will be forwarded by the Head of<br />

School to the Chair of the<br />

Committee.<br />

16.9.3 The student or the reassessor as per<br />

paragraphs 16.3 or 16.4 may submit<br />

any other written material to the<br />

Committee in support of their case.<br />

Any additional evidence so provided<br />

shall be copied to the other party or<br />

parties in the appeal.<br />

16.9.4 The student must be given at least five<br />

work days' notice in advance of the<br />

date, time and place of the appeal<br />

hearing.<br />

16.9.5 Students invited to attend a meeting<br />

of the Committee may be<br />

represented by an advocate who<br />

may not be a member of the Appeals<br />

Committee.<br />

16.9.6 The student and a representative of<br />

the Division separately must be<br />

given the opportunity to appear<br />

during the course of the hearing.<br />

16.10 The Assessment Review Appeals Committee<br />

shall investigate the issue in the following<br />

manner:<br />

16.10.1 The Committee will meet within<br />

fifteen working days of the date the<br />

appeal is lodged with the Academic<br />

Registrar. It will consider all written<br />

documentation including the written<br />

statements of the student and staff<br />

member and the written statement<br />

of any witnesses.<br />

16.10.2 The Committee may call before it<br />

the student and other parties<br />

considered appropriate by the<br />

Committee.<br />

16.10.3 Committee decisions should be<br />

reached through a majority vote or<br />

by agreement between the members,<br />

all of whom have equal voting<br />

rights.
